Where is Argentina or South Africa and why there?
Argentina is located in the most southern part of Latin America and is the 8th largest nation in the world. A cosmopolitan city with all the modern technologies and infrastructure you would find in any 1st world country.
South Africa is located on the southern tip of Africa. It is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean on the west, the Indian Ocean on the south and east. Along its northern border, from west to east, lie Namibia, Botswana, and Zimbabwe, and to the northeast are Mozambique and Swaziland. South Africa is a large, diverse and incredibly beautiful country. The size of France and Spain combined, and roughly twice the size of Texas, it varies from the picturesque Garden Route towns of the Western Cape to the raw subtropical coast of northern KwaZulu-Natal, with the vast Karoo semi-desert across its heart and one of Africa's premier safari destinations, Kruger National Park, in the northeast. It's also one of the great cultural meeting points of the African continent, a fact obscured by years of enforced racial segregation, but now manifest in the big cities.
Argentina and South Africa have some of the best and highest qualified medical professionals and institutions at a very affordable price compared to countries like the USA and Europe.
Surgical Escapes is situated in Buenos Aires, Argentina and in South Africa we are based in Pretoria - the Capital.

Why are the procedures so cheap?
Due to the favorable exchange rate of the Peso U$D (3:1) and the Rand U$D (7:1) medical procedures are very affordable in Argentina and in South Africa. Prices for the same procedures in countries such as the USA and Europe are very expensive. Therefore we believe that we are an exceptionally good alternative. This does not mean that we provide an inferior medical service - to the contrary!
[x] _____________________________________________________________________________________
But I don't speak Spanish!
Don't worry we speak English, Spanish and Afrikaans (similar to Dutch).

What happens if complications arise?
Law in Argentina and South Africa requires the client/patient to sign an Indemnity Agreement and a Consent Form prior to surgery stating that the patient is undergoing surgery at own free will and understands fully the procedure(s) and any risks and potential complications . Should problems arise and the procedure needs to be changed, the surgeon will inform the patient of the options so that the patient could make the best alternative decision. Should the patient not be able to make a decision the surgeon will discuss the matter with the person the patient has assigned as guardian or alternative contact person the client/patient has chosen to make the necessary decisions on his/her behalf. If necessary we will offer you a second/third opinion.

More FAQ
What are the differences between cosmetic and reconstructive surgeries?
Cosmetic surgery is performed to reshape normal structures of the body in order to improve the person's appearance and self-esteem. Cosmetic surgery is usually not covered by health insurance because it is elective.
Reconstructive surgery is performed on abnormal structures of the body caused by congential defects, developmental abnormalities, trauma, infection, tumors or disease. It is generally performed to improve function, but may also be done to approximate a normal appearance. Reconstructive surgery is generally covered by health insurance policies although coverage for specific procedures and levels of coverage may vary.
What about postoperative pain?
Patients tolerate pain postoperatively in different ways. While some patients may describe the pain as an ache, others experience greater discomfort. Appropriate pain medications are prescribed for the postoperative patients, and these help minimize discomfort. Most facial cosmetic operations have minimal discomfort postoperatively. Liposuction is slightly more uncomfortable, and operations that require elevation or tightening of the muscles such as an abdominoplasty or breast augmentation, may have some significant discomfort the first two days.
Do men have cosmetic procedures performed as well?
Increasing numbers of men are choosing to look as good as they feel. In fact, 14 percent of all cosmetic procedures are perfomed on men with the most popular procedures being eyelid surgery, liposuction and nose shaping. Some men may need a procedure for male gynecomastia, common disease of the male breast where there is a benign glandular enlargement.
What age group is most likely to undergo cosmetic surgery?
All age groups have cosmetic surgery; however ages 35-55 is the leading group, accounting for almost 40 percent of all procedures.
How long is the recuperative period and when can I return to work?
The length of time it takes to recuperate after plastic surgery varies depending on the procedure performed and the person having surgery. Most patients require assistance for the first two days. Then most patients are able to care for themselves, but may still need assistance if they have small children to care for. The specific lengths of recuperation for a few of the procedures we offer are outlined below. These are approximations, and do not include return to exercise.
• Eyelid Surgery: Patients usually can get around independently by the second day. With the use of sunglasses, they may feel comfortable going to the store by the third or fourth day, and could return to work in five to seven days.
• Face lift Surgery: Most people usually can get around independently by the second day. Some do not feel comfortable going out in public for five to seven days. The recovery period requires 10 to 14 days before returning to work for those who have positions that require high degrees of visibility.
• Breast Surgery: Recovering patients can expect to get around independently by the second day. Most return to work in five to seven days.
• Liposuction: Expect to get around independently by the second day, but earlier if smaller areas are treated. One can return to work and normal activities in five to seven days.
What is resurfacing of the skin?
Skin resurfacing is a technique for smoothing fine wrinkles and blending or removing discolored areas. The focus is on improving skin texture and color that augments the results of surgical procedures such as eye lifts and face lifts.
What are the options for skin resurfacing?
Chemical peels with glycolic acid, trichloroacetic acid and phenol have been successfully used for many years to selectively smooth the outer layers of skin and remove discolored areas. Laser resurfacing is also effective and a good option for some patients. Mechanically sanding down the skin, known as dermabrasion, has been used just as long.
How do lasers work?
Lasers work by bouncing a beam of light back and forth between optical mirrors and lenses, amplifying the strength with each cycle. When the beam is powerful enough, it is released in a short pulse of energy. This burst of energy causes a carefully controlled burn. The color and energy of the light depends upon what type of material is being stimulated. Each laser can be tuned, much like a musical instrument. Different types of lasers are used to remove irregular contours, discolored areas, tattoos, blood vessels and unwanted hair. Many materials can be used in laser beams, such as carbon dioxide, ruby crystals, and argon, which is a gas similar to what is used in florescent lights.
Are lasers safe?
For the most part lasers are very safe. However, as with any medical procedure there are risks and benefits. Scarring, pain, lack of permanent results, delayed healing up to several months, and other risks are uncommon, but possible. Sometimes additional treatment in the form of surgery may be necessary after laser treatment.
What is the most common cosmetic surgical procedure performed today?
Liposuction is the most popular procedure performed today. Also known as suction-assisted lipectomy, it is the removal of localized areas of fat that does not respond to dieting and exercises and are deemed genetically inherited fat deposits. Some areas of the body in which liposuction can be performed are the head (chin, neck and cheeks), arms, abdomen, buttocks, hips, thighs, knees and ankles. Once the fat cells are removed, the body does not replace them; although fat cells left behind can enlarge if a patient does not maintain a healthy diet and exercise program.
Who is a candidate for liposuction?
Generally people who have localized areas of protruding fat achieve the most dramatic results. Patients who are slightly overweight can benefit from liposuction, but it is best to be at or near your normal weight. Good skin elasticity permits the skin to shrink easily to the reduced contour. There are no absolute age limits for liposuction.
What areas are most frequently treated with liposuction?
In women, the single most frequently treated areas are the outer thighs, followed by the stomach. In men, the flank area or "love handles" are treated most frequently.
Liposuction seems very simple and safe. Are there any dangers?
Although liposuction is very safe and effective, it is a surgical procedure and can cause complications such as infection, bleeding and nerve damage. In addition, aesthetic complications such as skin irregularity or waviness can occur if too much fat is removed. Fortunately, complications are uncommon and most patients are satisfied with their results.
Who is a candidate for plastic surgery?
The best plastic surgery candidate is someone with realistic expectations and an understanding of the limitations set by medicine, technology, and each patient's own body. Good candidates have a strong self-image, and well-developed reason for pursuing a plastic surgery procedure. They are looking for improvement of a physical trait, knowing that while this positive change may enhance their self-image, it will not change people's perception of them. Dangerous motivations for plastic surgery would be purely doing it to gain popularity, or attempting to reverse recent life crises.
Is there a "right" age to pursue plastic surgery?
There isn't any overarching rule as to the right age for plastic surgery. In fact, the appropriateness of a certain procedure should be determined more on a case by case basis, looking at the individual's unique body type and aging process. Of course, there are age tendencies for certain procedures. Facelifts generally are not performed on patients under 30, as mini-lifts or laser procedures might be suggested instead, but this is not a rule. Otoplasty, on the other hand, is appropriate for adults or patients as young as 5 years old.
Is plastic surgery covered by insurance?
When the plastic surgery procedure is being performed for cosmetic reasons, insurance will not be involved. When the surgery is necessary for reconstructive purposes, however, it may be partially or fully covered by insurance. Plastic surgery procedures that may be covered by insurance often include breast reconstructive (after a mastectomy), rhinoplasty (for breathing problems), tummy tuck surgery (for gastric bypass patients) and eyelid surgery (to correct vision problems).
What is the difference between cosmetic and reconstructive surgery?
Cosmetic plastic surgery is performed to enhance or change a healthy, normal, functioning part of the body. Nothing but the patient's desire for physical improvement necessitates cosmetic plastic surgery. Reconstructive surgery, however, is intended to correct a physical abnormality caused by a birth defect, disease or tumor, physical trauma, or infection. The goal of reconstructive surgery may be to restore function or to achieve physical normality.
Where is plastic surgery performed?
That can depend on the surgeon. Most plastic surgeons are affiliated with local hospitals and can arrange operating room times as needed. Many carry out a similar procedure at surgical centers, while other surgeons have private surgery suites in their own office space. You'll find that many plastic surgeons fit into all or most of these categories, and offer options to each patient. They would then help you choose your surgery location based on comfort, safety, scheduling issues, and sometimes geography issues (which surgery location is closest to home, etc.).
How much pain is involved in plastic surgery?
Each plastic surgery procedure carries a different level of discomfort, and requires different methods of anesthetizing. In most situations, the patient's preferences for safety and comfort, as well as personal pain threshold can help determine what type of anesthesia will be used. Very minor, non-invasive surgeries might involve a topical anesthetic, while minor invasive surgeries may call for local anesthetic or local combined with sedation. In more involved surgery, general anesthesia is usually used.
Is plastic surgery outpatient or inpatient?
Most plastic surgery procedures are performed on an outpatient basis. In some cases, usually when the surgery is very extensive or complications arise, an overnight stay might be required.
Can I finance my plastic surgery procedure?
Sure. Plastic surgery financing is now becoming common place in plastic surgery offices around the country. A member of the office team can explain your financing options with you and let you know how to get in touch with the providers to apply for a loan. Many banks provide financing for elective procedures as well.
10 Most Often Asked Questions about Breast Augmentation
Question 1: Why do you feel there has been such a dramatic increase in breast augmentation surgery?
Dr.: The research evidence shows it is a safe procedure and that has contributed to the increase. In 1995 the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) reported that scientific studies found saline filled prostheses to be safe. The FDA approves the use of saline filled breast prostheses for augmentation. At present, augmentation mammaplasty is the second most popular cosmetic procedure nationally.
In addition, there are now companies that offer financing options. This has made breast augmentation more affordable for more people.
Question 2: Why do women usually want this type of surgery?
Dr.: I think that women have different reasons for wanting to do this procedure. In my experience, most patients have wanted to increase the size of their breasts for years before seeking a consultation. Commonly the woman may feel that her breasts never developed proportionately to the remainder of her body. However, I also see women who lost breast volume following pregnancy or weight loss and want to restore the size they had before. Contrary to popular opinion, most women do not want this surgery to be more sexually appealing to men, but to improve their own self-image and to feel comfortable with their own body. Many women say that the clothes or bathing suit they wear will fit them better if they feel more proportional. Breast augmentation makes this possible for them.
Question 3: How painful is this surgery and how long is the recovery?
Dr.: Discomfort can vary dramatically from patient to patient. During the first couple of days, a woman is usually very sore. This can be controlled with medication. I like patients to have a week to recover, depending on the degree of physical work her job requires. For example, a hair stylist may require two weeks because her arms are in constant use. Patients should refrain from activities requiring heavy weight lifting for approximately six weeks to allow for complete healing.
Question 4: What are the scars that result from this surgery?
Dr.: I prefer to make the incision in the armpit or on the underside of the breast just above the crease. That way the scar cannot be easily seen. The scar an inch and a quarter long and usually fades with time. I place dissolving sutures underneath the skin. That way, the stitches are not visible and do not need to be removed.
Question 5: How do you determine what size implant to use?
Dr.: There are many things to consider when thinking about size. I spend a lot of time talking to the patient about her reasons for wanting the surgery and the results she is hoping for. Next I have the patient physically demonstrate the size she wishes. After I have a clear understanding of the patient's expectations, I am able to determine the best possible size and shape based on the width of the patient's chest, shoulders, hips, and height, among other things.
Question 6: Can the implant be placed either underneath or on top of the chest muscle?
Dr.: I generally recommend that the implants be placed underneath the chest (pectoralis) muscle because this usually gives the breast look more natural.
Question 7: Is it possible to breast-feed after an augmentation?
Dr.: Yes. Because the implant is placed behind the breast tissue and nipple, the ability to breast-feed is not altered.
Question 8: Do you use a hospital or an outpatient surgical facility?
Dr.: I perform most of my surgery in a hospital operating room because it is the safest environment to perform surgery. In a hospital, I have access to additional equipment and resources should it be necessary. However, my patients are allowed to recover in the comfort of their own home within two to three hours after the surgery. I have already negotiated fees with the hospital so that my patients do not have to pay a premium for their safety.
Question 9: How do I pay for this?
Dr.: As is the case with all elective cosmetic surgery, full payment is required prior to your surgery date. Currently we do offer other payment options in addition to cash or credit card. Staff will discuss all of the prices with you and, if you are interested, they will give you the names of the financing firms with whom we work.
Question 10: How does one select a competent plastic surgeon?
Dr.: As a starting point, it is very important that the surgeon is certified. Today many surgeons are affiliated to a variety of different associations such as ISAPS etc. You should feel that your surgeon has spent enough time with you to understand your wants. You doctor should also be willing to show you before and after photos of his or her own work.
How much does it cost for a consultation?
Consultations are free. Please call today to arrange your free consultation.
How long does the consultation take?
Your consultation will take 30-60 minutes depending on the procedure and complexity of your case. Please allow an additional 30 minutes total for completion of paperwork (general information before your appointment and detailed information following your consultation).
Can I drive myself home from surgery?
In most cases, you will need someone to drive you home and stay with you for at least 24 hours following surgery.
Can I go home the day of surgery?
Yes, all of our surgeries are outpatient surgeries. Meaning, you leave our facility to recover in the comfort of your own home.
Where is surgery performed?
Our surgeons only operate in accredited clinics or hospitals. Most pre-operative appointments take place in the surgeon's office.
How much time will I have to take off work after my surgery?
This depends on a number of factors, such as, the complexity of the surgical procedure being performed, your age, your general health, the type of work you do, and many other variables. Your doctor will be able to give you a clearer picture, based on your individual circumstances, at your consultation appointment. In general, most patients should plan on being off work for 1-2 weeks.
What is required to schedule a cosmetic surgery?
A deposit of 25% of the surgical and services fees is required to reserve a day for surgery. The remainder of the surgical fee is due at your pre-op appointment or at least 10 business days prior to surgery. Anesthesia is paid by the surgeon to the anesthesia provider on the day of surgery. Your deposit holds your date for surgery but not the time. All surgery times are subject to change per the doctor's discretion based on the anesthesia needs and well being of each patient.
How can I pay for my surgery?
Payments can be made by Visa, MasterCard, American Express, money order/money transfer, cash or through an approved financing company. Note that personal checks will not be accepted less than ten (10) business days prior to surgery. Payments can be made in our office during regular business hours, by phone or by mail.
Who is a good candidate for cosmetic surgery?
People who have features that make them look older than they feel or who have features that they don't feel are attractive are candidates for elective cosmetic surgery. If you can specifically identify traits that you would like to improve and have an idea of how you want to look it is helpful. An example is someone who wants a different shaped nose, smaller or larger breasts, a face and neck with less "sagging" or who has fat deposits that are diet and exercise resistant. A good candidate for surgery also understands the risks and limitations of surgery as explained by their surgeon and works in partnership with their doctor to attain their goals. Likewise, a poor candidate has unrealistic expectations, ignores the advice of their surgeon, does not follow pre and post operative directions and expects the surgery to change their luck, performance or love life.
Is it expensive?
Quality cosmetic surgery, like any skilled endeavor, requires years of training and experience on the part of the surgeon and anesthesiologist. You should not be gouged, but do expect to pay a fair price for your procedure. You should also expect attention to detail, an attentive staff and excellence in the performance of your surgery. The pleasure of a bargain is forgotten sooner than the memory of a job poorly done. As in anything else, you pay for what you get. Be sure to check your surgeon's credentials and ask questions before you have surgery.
Where is the surgery performed?
We believe your safety is the most important aspect of what we do. All of our surgery is performed in an accredited outpatient surgery facility or in a hospital OR.
Who gives anesthesia?
Anesthesia is provided by Board Certified anesthesiologists, the same ones who work in local hospitals. It is not in your best interest to have your surgeon trying to give anesthesia, monitor your vital signs and do surgery at the same time.
Types of Anesthesia:
General Anaesthetic
This is a full anaesthetic, carried out in hospital under the care of a fully qualified anaesthetist. It enables the Surgeon to carry out your operation without any discomfort to you, or knowledge that the operation is taking place. Operations carried out under general anaesthetic may be done as a day case or as an overnight stay in hospital.
Sedation with Local Anaesthetic
A sedating drug is given to you in order that you sleep throughout the operation. This is administered by a qualified anaesthetist who cares for you whilst the Surgeon carries out the operation. The Surgeon will also use a local anaesthetic at the operation site to ensure the area is numb and that you are not disturbed from your ‘sleep'. Most operations carried out under sedation enable you to return home the same day of treatment.
Local Anaesthetic
The Surgeon injects a numbing solution to the area that is being treated to minimize any discomfort you may feel during the operation. You will be fully awake during the treatment and able to be immediately discharged on completion of your treatment.
Will it hurt?
Pain is a subjective feeling. It is perceived differently by different people. Procedures where muscle manipulation is involved (abdominoplasty, breast augmentation) will be more painful than procedures where only the skin and subcutaneous tissue is operated on (S-facelift, liposuction, breast reduction, eyelid surgery). In all cases care is taken to limit the amount of trauma to your tissue and anesthetics are used liberally during the operation to limit pain afterward. In addition, post operative pain medication is prescribed.
Are there scars?
Skin cannot be cut without scarring. The trick is to limit the length of any necessary incisions and close them in such a way that the body has the best chance of healing with a thin line in the skin. In addition, the incision is placed in a previous wrinkle if possible. After the operation, topical medication is used to decrease the appearance of the scar.
How do I know my doctor is qualified?
At the minimum, your surgeon should be board certified by a board recognized. Ask friends for references and then make certain you are comfortable talking to and being around your surgeon. You should be able to find a well qualified doctor without having to put up with poor bed side manner.
What is involved at the first Consultation?
At the initial consultation a history will be taken and a brief examination performed. We will try to understand what is most important to you. After a brief examination we will discuss the various options for you to achieve your goals.

1) For a breast surgery, a mammography is necessary although this can be done in Argentina.
2) For eye surgery, an ophthalmology examination is required.
3) For patients over 50, a cardiogram is required.
These preliminary examinations must be made by your own doctor and are not included in the price. As a first step, they are essential for us so that we can confirm that there are no medical reasons for you not to undergo the surgery/treatment. They will form part of your medical file that will be presented to your surgeon and anesthetist during the pre-surgery examination.

Yes. It's very difficult for our medical team to make an accurate diagnosis otherwise. This is only to put your best interests and well-being first. Therefore the following is needed:
• For liposuction, breast implants and abdominal reduction, left and right, front and three quarter profiles are needed.
• For face lifts, photos with the neck fully visible, full face, profile and three quarter profiles are needed.
• For nose surgery, a facial close up, a profile and a photo with the head pulled back are required.
• For hair transplants, photos of the top and the back of the head are required together with a profile.
• For dental surgery/treatments a close up of the frontal view of the teeth are needed.
